TUAW's Daily Mac App: AppCleaner

AppCleaner

Last week on the Daily Mac App we featured the infamous uninstaller AppZapper. Today we've got a fully-featured free alternative, AppCleaner.

Available from FreeMacSoft, the freeware (donations accepted) AppCleaner does what it says on the tin. Just like AppZapper, you can drag-and-drop the offending application onto AppCleaner to locate and delete all the associated files. Alternatively you can hit the Applications, Widgets or Others tabs to find and delete things directly from AppCleaner. "Others" thankfully includes Preference Panes, so you can get rid of any unwanted additions to your System Preferences with ease.

So far so good, it does exactly what AppZapper does, but it's free. AppCleaner does have one unique feature, however, and that's "SmartDelete." An option in the preferences, SmartDelete allows you to carry on deleting apps the way Apple intended by just sending them to the trash, but with the added benefit of trashing all the associated files automatically. While SmartDelete is running, AppCleaner is supposed to detect that you've trashed an app and offer to find the associated files for you. I couldn't get it to work, but free's free right?

If you want to get rid of some applications you've installed but never use, AppCleaner does the job fine. It may not be the most comprehensive Mac cleaning app out there, but as uninstallers go, AppCleaner is free and works great.

Perhaps with Lion landing soon, now is the time to start clearing out the cobwebs and get your Mac ready for the shiny new OS X 10.7.

Thanks to brijazz for the suggestion.

Card.io takes on mobile payment through credit card photos

Two ex-Admob executives have launched a new mobile payment system for both iOS and Android devices. The Card.io payment system is designed to work as embedded code within a third-party app. At the time of purchase, a Card.io-enabled app is launched by the user and snaps a photo of their credit card. The built-in Card.io functionality then scans the card for the necessary information required to process a payment through the participating merchants third-party payment system. Upon completing the transaction, the data is immediately deleted....

The New MacBook Pro: The Last Notebook You?ll Ever Need

Noting that the new 15- and 17-inch quad-core MacBook Pro models deliver ?twice the CPU performance of Core 2 Duo, three times the graphics performance of the previous generation?s Nvidia GeForce GT 330M, and more than ten times the external I/O bandwidth of 800MHz FireWire,? InfoWorld reviewer Tom Yager writes, ?This brand of magic can?t be conjured by Apple?s competitors.? He adds: ?If, in all of this, you can?t see a reason to upgrade your notebook, maybe I can bring the point home: This might be the last notebook computer you?ll ever need or want.?

Scoble talks rich Nanosys LCD tech, iPad 3 Retina Displays

Nanosys in a fresh set of tours, one with Robert Scoble, has shown a new display technology that could dramatically improve the color accuracy of LCDs, particularly in mobile. A quantum dot film layer, made of iridium phosphide, eliminates the bias towards blue on usual LED backlighting and expands the color range by as much as 50 percent by shifting more of the emphasis to red and green. The approach has a print-like process and, along with its passive nature, means it won't raise the price of a display or take away from the battery life....

Change Mail behavior when replying to a message in the Sent mailbox

When using Gmail (I don't know if this is the case with other webmail providers), if you reply to a message in your Sent mailbox, the recipient of the reply message is set to the recipient of the original message you sent. That makes sense, it's useful for quickly replying to a message you've just sent when you realize you've forgotten something (like an attachment).

However, Apple Mail doesn't work that way; if you reply to a message in your Sent mailbox, you (the sender of the original message) become the recipient of the reply message (which is pretty useless in my opinion).

If you choose Reply all instead of Reply, it's a little better: you are still the 'To' recipient of the reply message, but the recipients of the original message are added as Cc: recipients of the reply message.

I used this fact to create an AppleScript that when invoked creates a reply to the selected message in the Sent mailbox in Mail, with the recipients of the original mess ...

Mac OS X 10.6.8 Release Imminent?

Apple has just posted a new support document noting that updating to Mac OS X 10.6.8 is "strongly recommended" for users running any of the new Final Cut Pro X applications released earlier today.
Updating to Mac OS X v10.6.8 or later is strongly recommended when using Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4.
Mac OS X 10.6.8 is of course not yet publicly available, although it has been in developer testing for some time, with Apple appearing to be winding down development as evidenced by a pair of developer seeds released just a few days apart last week.

While Mac OS X 10.6.8 isn't technically a requirement for Final Cut Pro X and users are successfully running it today under Mac OS X 10.6.7, the strength of Apple's wording in the support document suggests that the software update should be making an appearance very soon to get users of the company's professional-level video production software on firm footing.
