Adobe demos Photoshop for iPad with real layer support [U]

(Update: video) Adobe at the Photoshop World conference this morning showed off a version of Photoshop for the iPad that could give the tablet real Photoshop image editing. Unlike the mostly filter-based Photoshop Express, the unnamed version would let users add, switch to, and edit layers with an isometric view to show the different layers at a glance. Other additions should bring image objects that can be dragged and rotated as well as a color mixer that allows blending "like a painter."...

With iPad 2, Apple One-Ups Itself

Associated Press reviewer Rachel Metz writes that with the release of a ?skinnier, faster, and slightly lighter? iPad 2, Apple has pulled further ahead of competitors ?with improvements that make an already excellent tablet even more enticing.? Among those improvements, Metz praises the integration of the new front- and rear-facing cameras with FaceTime and PhotoBooth, noticeably faster web surfing and video loading, and the iPad 2 battery, which in tests ?performed like a champ.? She concludes: ?Without question, the iPad 2 is a great tablet. Chances are, it will be the best tablet in town ? at least until the iPad 3 arrives.?

Gamer turns iPad into virtual A-10 cockpit gear [video]

A gamer in the past few weeks has started up a project to turn the iPad into a unique peripheral for the combat flight sim DCS A-10C. The homebrew iControl DCS app uses the iPad to replace multiple instruments that would otherwise require moving the in-game camera away from the outside world. Shacknews member Boarder2's implementation uses Wi-Fi but transmits enough data to show live information from the Multi Function Control Displays (MFCDs) while still providing real-time control of buttons. Users tap to switch between different sections of the cockpit....

Exclusive: yap.TV 2.5, a social TV guide

I had the pleasure of spending part of Wednesday afternoon chatting with yap.TV founder & chief marketing officer Shawn Cunningham. yap.TV is a free social TV guide that initially came out for the iPad last fall, and later for the iPhone and iPod touch. We lightly touched on yap.tv last fall when Steve Wozniak appeared on an episode of The Big Bang Theory. At the time, Woz chatted along with viewers through yap.tv, and it turns out he does more than that. He is an adviser for the app itself.

yap.TV is billed as a second-screen companion, an app that you can utilize while watching your favorite series to connect with like-minded viewers through social media. If you're watching the latest episode of American Idol and want to see what everyone else thinks of the finalists, this app is for you. But, it's not for anyone who wants to avoid spoilers, even though yap.TV has a system that filters tweets by time zone to try and stop this.

Cunningham took me through a hands-on demo of the software. While the first release was solid, the additions for the iPhone and iPod touch have made it better, and the UI has been overhauled to take advantage of the smaller screen. This review focuses on the iPhone version of the app.

iPad 2 Loses the Water Damage Indicators

There is little in a gadget lover's life that's more disappointing than taking a device in for warranty repairs, only to be told that it isn't eligible because of water damage. iPad 2 owners may seldom have to face that kind of disappointment, new info suggests.

Make event emails sent from 10.6 iCal Server come from actual user

In Server Admin, the iCal settings allow you to specify a single email from which event invitations will come. For a personal calendar though, you really want the email to come from your own email.

The script which sends invitations is found at:

/usr/share/caldavd/lib/python/twistedcaldav/mail.py

It appears that it tries to find the appropriate email address, but I could not figure out how to make a value ever be present where it was looking.

So, I modified the script as shown below. Change:
  if organizer.startswith("mailto:"):   orgEmail = fromAddr = organizer[7:]  else:   fromAddr = serverAddress   orgEmail = None  cn = calendar.getOrganizerProperty().params().get('CN', (None,))[0]

Video extender powers iPad 2 wireless HDMI hack: The streaming adds 2 pounds

If you don't mind spending a bit of money and adding a couple of pounds of weight (and a two hour time limit) to your iPad, this video demonstrates that a simple HDMI wireless extender will allow you to transmit audio and video to a remote presentation system.

After watching the clip, we hopped on Amazon to see what it might take to duplicate this hack; we found the HP Wireless TV Connect (the same product that appears to be in use) for $150, and a similar Brite-View product for $160. Although you can choose a VGA extender over an HDMI one, you will not be able to transmit audio the way this solution does -- and you'll end up spending more.

So how much should you expect to spend, beyond the iPad and receiving screen? The HP transmitter should work fine, although you can scale up to more professional HDMI transmitters for more dough if you need the quality. The Digital AV Adapter is $39, and the battery pack will add another $24 -- then you'll need a case to hold it all together. And stronger arms to carry the iPad around.

Still, for mobile presenters and trainers who absolutely have to roam around with iPad in hand, it's an intriguing and (relatively) economical hack.

Cloud storage a steep climb for enterprise

Cloud storage a steep climb for enterprise It's been nearly five years since Amazon introduced its groundbreaking Simple Storage Service, or S3, as it's more commonly known. But despite that offering's track record, many enterprise IT executives still struggle with the notion of using cloud-based storage services to hold their corporate data.

Get your rare Twentieth Anniversary Mac on eBay

Want a piece of Apple history? Bring your wallet and your cutthroat bidding skills and head on over to eBay, where there's an untouched, unopened Twentieth Anniversary Mac up for grabs.

This wasn't celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Mac; rather, the TAM was created as an homage to the 20th birthday of Apple in 1996. The special-edition Mac didn't actually make it to market until 1997 due to the fact that Apple seemed to have overlooked the impending celebration in 1996. At the time it started selling, the Twentieth Anniversary Mac sold for $7,499.

What did you get for your money? A PowerPC 603e CPU running at 250 MHz, 32 MiB of RAM, a 12.1" active matrix display with a best resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, a CD-ROM drive, a floppy drive, and a 2 GB hard disk drive. Those were pretty low specs even for the time, but the cool factor of the TAM was enhanced by the incredible design.

Made in a metallic green / gold color, the TAM featured one of the first desktop LCD displays, leather palm rests on the keyboard, a built-in TV / FM tuner and remote, and even had a custom-designed Bose sound system. Only 12,000 of these wonders were built, and of the manufactured TAMs, 399 of them were kept for spare parts. Both Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were given TAMs, as well as a group of Apple Australia executives.

While TAMs in good condition usually go for about $1,000, the bidding price as of the time this post was written was $1,205 -- probably due to the publicity that the auction of this rare Mac has received. Although the eBay listing shows this as being "unopened," there are photos of the inside of the box.

We have video of Jony Ive (noted as Jon Ive in the video!) describing his design on the next page. Enjoy -- and then go make your bid for this rare piece of Apple history.
